On March 19, 2020, 12 experts, Ni Jiaxiang, Li Min, Li Shiliang, Liang Lanping, Yang Liqiang, Hu Junjie, Zhao Rui, Wang Xiaoping, Dou Zhi, from Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing, China. Hongan People’s Hospital, HuBei, China,Beijing University Cancer Hospital, Beijing, China,China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Beijing, China,Beijing Tongren Hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing, China, have formed novel coronavirus novel coronavirus group jointly treated by Chinese and Western medicine, and published an analysis paper on millimeter wave lung and acupoint radiation in the treatment of new coronavirus pneumonia in Beijing, capital.
After being hospitalized, 47 patients started to be treated with White Blood Cells (WBC), Lymphocytes (LYM), Hemoglobin Counts (HGB), Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), and Chlorine (Cl) indicators (Table 2.5 and 2.6). After combining the Chinese and Western medicine together with the millimeter wave treatment, there was no statistically significant difference in the White Blood Cells, Lymphocytes, Hemoglobin, Potassium, Sodium and Chlorine, compared with the status before treatment.
According to the “Diagnosis and Treatment Scheme for Novel Coronavirus Infected Pneumonia (Trial 7th Edition)” formulated by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China, the disease has been included as an acute respiratory infectious disease in the Class B infectious diseases stipulated in the “Law of the People’s Republic of China on Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases” and managed as an Category A infectious disease. The current treatment measures are mainly supportive and maintenance symptomatic treatments. While the development of specific drugs and vaccines requires a certain period of time, how to dig out various existing clinical treatment methods, screen for effective treatment methods to treat the disease, and improve the clinical efficacy have become an urgent task for the disease treatment. We have applied millimeter wave to treat non-bacterial inflammatory pain diseases for a long time, accumulated certain treatment experience and learned a lot of literature. From a large number of literature which applied millimeter waves to treat non-bacterial inflammation, chronic respiratory inflammatory diseases, and local infectious diseases, the research results deduced that millimeter wave is likely to play a certain active role in the treatment of the Coronavirus disease.
In the paper, 12 experts reviewed that In the 1970s, the millimeter waves were first applied to the clinic in the USSR9. Millimeter waves are electromagnetic waves with a wavelength of 1-10mm. Generally, waves with 0.3mm-0.5mm can be absorbed in human tissue10. Millimeter wave treatment can improve the body immunity. A controlled trial of tuberculosis patients in the former Soviet Union found that the volume of lung cavities in the antibiotic combined with millimeter wave treatment group was reduced by 59%, which was significantly higher than 30% in the antibiotic-only group. Infected wounds can play an anti-inflammatory effect and speed up the healing rate by 1.5-2 times4. On the one hand, millimeter-wave radiation played a role in inactivating pathogenic microorganisms; on the other hand, it is related with improving the immune function of the body. Multiple research results have confirmed that millimeter wave treatment can improve human immunity: 1) It can increase the number of peripheral blood macrophages and enhance the phagocytosis of macrophages; 2) Increase the proliferation rate of T lymphocytes and maintain a moderate ratio of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte; 3) Increase the number of B lymphocytes and immunoglobulins11,12. Moxibustion combined with millimeter wave therapy was tested on 60 patients with chronic bronchitis in China regarding its effect on lung function and inflammatory factor levels. Moxibustion combined with millimeter wave therapy was found to have attained better effect on chronic bronchitis compared with the drug-only group. Millimeter wave treatment can regulate the body’s immune system, improve lung function, reduce C-reactive protein levels, and promote the absorption of inflammatory substances3. Millimeter wave irradiation can improve vascular permeability through non-thermal effects, reducing the rate and extent of inflammatory substance exudation, lessening congestion and edema, promoting the absorption of inflammatory exudation through local capillary dilatation, and improving local tissue perfusion and metabolism. Therapeutic effects of millimeter waves found in the above studies should have good therapeutic and alleviating effects on lung pathological changes and clinical symptoms of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus.
Millimeter wave therapy has achieved certain therapeutic effect on chronic bronchitis due to its impact on anti-inflammation, vascular permeability improvement, and promotion on the absorption of inflammatory substances. Accordingly, we have encompassed millimeter wave therapy to the integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine in the treatment of test group patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia. The efficacy of integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment has been improved by exerting millimeter wave to enhance immune function, which works in improving vascular permeability, reducing penetration of inflammatory substances, reducing congestion and edema, promoting absorption of inflammatory exudation through local capillary dilatation, and improving local tissue perfusion and metabolism. The treatment results on test group also show that various indexes such as oxygenation index, blood oxygen saturation, pulmonary CT, coughs per day, LDH index, body temperature, and nucleic acid test results have gradually improved after admission with statistical difference on timings. This indicates that integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment combined with millimeter wave intervention significantly enhances the efficacy of novel coronavirus treatment, suggesting that millimeter wave therapy can be used as an effective treatment method in combination with conventional integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment. The 14-day negative rate of nucleic acid detection of 47 patients in this group reached 91.5%, which indicates that encompassing millimeter wave technology into conventional integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine treatment leads to rapid improvement of patient’s viral infection symptoms. Results proved integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine combined with millimeter-wave treatment to be a clinically proven rigorous treatment on combating novel coronavirus pneumonia.
In a word, the observational data of 47 patients with COVID-19 show that in the conventional treatment methods, which include traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, millimeter wave radiation can be added to directly enhance patients’ immune function ,reduce local Pulmonary lesions, improve and speed up the patient’s healing process and form a new therapeutic combination. The results of this study require further research and clinical validation in the treatment of COVID-19.
